Monday

We are thrilled to report that all 48 pupils arrived at Belfast Airport on time. Let that sink in. Forty-eight children. On time. Early, even. It was, frankly, a miracle of modern parenting and we salute every single one of you for it.

The same, unfortunately, cannot be said for Mrs O'Neile and Mrs Carson, who rolled in a full 15 minutes late — presumably having stopped for a leisurely breakfast and a browse of the morning paper. Mr Beckett, who had been standing at the meeting point with the quiet intensity of a man watching a penalty shootout, was not impressed.
To their credit, they arrived with their dignity intact. Mr Beckett's blood pressure, less so.

Security — A Mostly Peaceful Operation
Getting 48 pupils through airport security is not unlike herding very enthusiastic, cattle. Remarkably, it went rather well — just a couple of minor incidents involving metal water bottles that hadn't quite been emptied. The highlight, however, belonged to one unnamed pupil (you know who you are) who, having carefully removed his bag from his back, placed it on the security belt, watched it disappear behind the curtain, and then stood on the other side of the scanner utterly baffled as to where his bag had gone. Security personnel were very kind about it.

With security cleared, the children were released into the airport shops with the barely-contained energy of a class who've just been told it's golden time. WH Smith bore the brunt of it. A quick note on hydration strategy: several pupils, clearly concerned about the possibility of a water shortage somewhere over the Irish Sea, purchased not one, not two, but three 500ml bottles of drink each. That's 1.5 litres of liquid per child, pre-flight. Parents, we wish to formally advise you that the toilet queue on this plane was not once available!

Once aboard, something remarkable happened. The children settled. Beautifully. Quietly. Contentedly. Multiple members of the travelling public approached staff to say just how wonderfully behaved the group was, and we cannot overstate how proud that made us. Every single one of your children was a credit to your family and to Towerview. The one moment of collective noise? Touchdown in Amsterdam, naturally. The classic round of applause erupted — though in true Towerview fashion, a few enthusiastic souls couldn't quite wait for the wheels to hit the runway and began clapping in anticipation somewhere over the North Sea. Extra points for optimism.

Once in Holland we were met with some sunshine and our coach driver, Kyle, who speaks perfect English. This was, as it happens, rather fortuitous — Miss McCormack is still in the very early chapters of her Dutch language journey. We are confident she'll be fluent by Thursday. The weather, we are delighted to report, is beautifully dry and warm.

Luggage loaded, seats claimed, and then — lunch. Within approximately 90 seconds of the coach door closing, the packed lunches were out. Within 95 seconds, so were the drinks. What unfolded could only be described as a moving roadside picnic. First to have everything laid out with full picnic energy? Mrs Carson. The children, naturally, followed suit immediately. Kyle drove on, admirably unflinching. As the journey continued, the initial buzz gradually gave way to a beautiful, precious quiet as the children began to fade gently. Hopefully they will not use it all later tonight.

We arrived at our hotel to warm smiles and comfortable rooms. The children were given a little time to settle in, unpack, and make themselves at home. It is worth noting that several rooms went from freshly made hotel room to active archaeological dig in under sixty seconds. Bags were opened, contents distributed freely across all available floor space, and at least one child appeared to have unpacked by simply upending their entire suitcase!

Dinner was, in a word, magnificent. Freshly baked pizza straight from the pizza oven, chips, an array of breads, pastas, meats, and salads — the children were absolutely in their element. And then. Dessert. Ice cream arrived, and with it — sprinkles. The dining room by the end of pudding looked like a unicorn had sneezed inside a confetti factory. Tables, chairs, floors, jumpers, hair — all gently dusted in a rainbow of tiny sugar cylinders. We are fairly confident some children are still finding sprinkles in places that are anatomically baffling.

After dinner, we headed into town for a stroll to the local supermarket to pick up a few treats. The children browsed Dutch confectionery with the focused intensity of professional buyers at a trade fair. Choices were made. Snacks were secured. Holland made a very strong first impression on the sweet tooth front.

What a day. From a slightly chaotic start — Mrs O'Neile and Mrs Carson, we're still looking at you — to a spectacular finish, Day 1 has been everything we could have hoped for. Your children have been an absolute joy — funny, kind, enthusiastic, and the best possible ambassadors for Towerview Primary School. We are so incredibly proud of every single one of them.

Now — time for bed, the staff are recovering, and tomorrow the real adventure begins.  ðŸ§€ðŸŒ·ðŸš²
