Holland Blog - Day 2
Day 2 started with a bang! Picture this: 52 children descending upon a breakfast buffet like a plague of very polite locusts. I'm convinced these kids hadn't eaten in weeks based on the carnage left behind. The poor chef looked like he'd been through a war zone, frantically replenishing croissants faster than a magician pulling rabbits from a hat.
The Nutella situation was particularly concerning - I'm fairly certain we single-handedly cleared out their monthly supply in about 20 minutes. But, what I can confirm is that every child had something to eat, with one child even commenting that this was the best breakfast ever, and our kids looked like they were ready to conquer the world.
Next we introduced our merry band of 10 and 11-year-olds to the charming town of Valkenburg. What we didn't anticipate was witnessing the single largest capybara teddy migration in recorded history.
I kid you not, parents - your children have collectively adopted an entire capybara sanctuary. The local toy shops must think it's Christmas morning. Every other child emerged from shops clutching these oversized rodent plushies like they'd discovered buried treasure. We now have enough capybara teddies to start our own wildlife preserve back home!
After shopping we were off to Drielandenpunt, where Germany, Belgium, and the Netherlands meet, our pupils managed to master the art of being in three places at once. The photo opportunities were endless, and I'm pretty sure half of them are convinced they've unlocked some sort of geographical superpower.
The playground was a hit, with kids spinning, swinging, and generally defying gravity in ways that made us teachers slightly nervous but mostly impressed.
After the park, we went to the maze. This was supposed to be a peaceful break for the teachers while the kids safely got "lost."
What we didn't account for was the irresistible allure of water fountains scattered throughout the labyrinth.
Apparently, the signs saying "avoid the water features" were interpreted as "challenge accepted!" Every child emerged from that maze looking like they'd been through a car wash. Their logic? "The fountains looked lonely, so we thought we'd help them out."
The swimming session was going brilliantly. The kids were angels - well-behaved, looking out for each other, conquering slides like tiny aquatic warriors. We'd made it through almost the entire session without one whistle blow from the lifeguards.
Then Mr. Beckett happened.
In what can only be described as a moment of pure teacher madness, he decided to demonstrate his "Olympic-standard" cannonball technique. The lifeguards were not amused. The children, however, were absolutely delighted.
Through all the fun of today one thing has made the teachers so proud - watching these kids look out for each other. Not one child has been left behind or left out. They're sharing snacks, helping with heavy bags, and making sure everyone's included in every game and conversation. Our pupils are proving that kindness and friendship are alive and well. They're creating memories that will last a lifetime, and we as a staff are very proud!
Once back to the hotel, we had dinner and the swimming had obviously made them very hungry as we had full plates and happy faces. It's amazing how a good swim can work up such an appetite! The dining room was filled with animated conversations about pool adventures, with each child eager to share their favourite moments from the session.
Expectations for the children's return will be elevated as nothing but a three-course meal with plenty of variety will do - they've certainly developed a taste for the finer things during our stay!
The evening provided an opportunity for the kids to be together and spend some time playing in the park area. Impromptu football matches broke out, with plenty of laughter and friendly competition. Some children organised their own games of tag and hide-and-seek, while others simply enjoyed relaxing together and reflecting on the day's adventures.
The night finished off with an ice lolly for everyone - the perfect sweet ending to a perfect day. Watching them all sitting together, enjoying their treats and sharing stories, reminded us why these experiences are so invaluable for building friendships and creating lasting memories.
Tomorrow will be a big day as we tackle Phantasialand! We can almost feel the excitement bubbling up and that's just with the staff!! The children are already speculating about which rides they'll brave first and making plans with their friends for the ultimate theme park adventure.
All kids in bed after a fantastic day. We truly are so blessed to have such great pupils that are a pleasure to be away with. Their enthusiasm, kindness to one another, and positive attitudes have made every moment of this trip a joy. Watching them step out of their comfort zones, support each other, and embrace new experiences fills our hearts with pride.
Until tomorrow 😀
